As a busy mum of two who
survives exists on very little sleep each night, I have a ‘permanently exhausted’ look about me, particularly around the eyes. My eyes don’t have bags – they have their own luggage set! And I can get the ‘smoky eye look’ without the help of any makeup, thanks to the huge dark circles! So, when I was offered the chance to try a new Brightening Eye Serum from Oyster Skincare, I positively jumped at the chance.
My skincare routine is somewhat basic as it is; a quick wash with a face wash in the morning before moisturising, then I use a hot cloth cleanser at night to take the layers of makeup off before bed. Most of the time… ahem! I have been blessed with good genes and although I’m approaching middle age (or am I there already?), I’m not too wrinkly, although this means I haven’t really looked into lotions and potions to combat the signs of ageing. Would an eye serum make much difference?
What is it?
Brightening Eye Serum from Oyster Skincare is a serum formulated in British laboratories from a blend of skin-enhancing actives and essential oils designed to lift your mood. Oyster call it ‘A Therapeutic Kiss’.
“Oyster blends natural plant wisdom and skin-enhancing actives to create beauty products to revive you from your busy lifestyle.”
The serum is made from super-smoothing Hyaluronic Acid, anti-wrinkle Pentapeptides, anti-aging Co-enzyme Q10, and Cafeisilane & Niacinamide for puffy eyes, dark circles under eye treatment and bags; refreshingly blended with antioxidant Green Tea & Raspberry Extracts and gently soothing Cornflower. The lavender, mandarin and grapefruit essential oil blend gives a pleasant fragrance.
The product is natural, alcohol-free, paraben-free, not tested on animals, suitable for vegans & perfume-free (although fragranced by the essential oils). Hygienically sealed in an airless pump, the actives are protected from deterioration caused by air and light. The pump design also means that no drop is wasted.
The idea is to apply morning and night. Just a tiny amount is needed, and this droplet is then broken to release the aromas of the essential oils, which are inhaled before applying the gel to the skin.
What did I think
I’ve been trying the serum for a couple of weeks now. Like I said, my skincare routine isn’t exactly the best, so I admit, I have forgotten to apply the serum on occasion (the occasions where falling into bed, exhausted, has been more appealing than spending time removing makeup!)
The packaging is fresh and attractive and the pump bottle is the same. I found that I only needed a tiny amount – certainly not a full squish of the pump. This means the 30ml bottle of serum will last for ages, although the shelf life is advised as 6 months. To apply, I put a tiny drop on my ring finger, then pat my other ring finger onto it to break the droplet. Then I cup my hands around my nose and inhale the gentle fragrance of the mood-enhancing essential oils.
Next, I gently pat my ring fingers onto my eye socket under my eye and then around the top on my brow bone to apply the serum. It feels light and not greasy like some other creams and gels I’ve tried in the past. I was worried that it was fragranced, but it is subtle and natural, so it didn’t make my eyes water. It absorbs nicely, although, as I use a mineral powder foundation, I do have to make sure I’ve left it long enough before I apply my makeup or else it can stick too much to where I’ve applied the serum as it can be a little tacky.
The serum is refreshing on application and, as it dries, there is a slight tightening sensation, particularly under the eye. After a couple of weeks of use, I have noticed that my eye area looks a little ‘fresher’ and I hope that with continued use the dark circles will lighten too (although I am very sleep-deprived, so I think it might take a miracle!). I was attracted by the natural ingredients and the ethical production as I try to use natural skin care products as often as I can.
I think it’s good value for the price (and with the money-back guarantee, what’s to lose?) and I will continue using it.
Disclosure: I received a complimentary bottle of serum in return for a fair and honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
